What is Shadow Banning on Instagram?<\/span><\/h2>\n

A shadowban means that your posts <\/span>will only be shown to your followers<\/b>. This means they won\u2019t show up under suggestions or when people are searching for a hashtag you\u2019ve used in your posts. This will make it very difficult for you to reach new audiences and grow your account.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instagram has not confirmed anything about why this happens or even if it exists at all, but many users have already been <\/span>affected.<\/b> And they have made their own attempts to try to get rid of it. <\/span>Do you want to know if your account has been affected?<\/b> If so, keep reading!<\/span><\/p>\n

How to know if you\u2019ve been Shadowbanned?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no sign in your profile, but you\u2019ll know it\u2019s happened because the <\/span>engagement and reach of your publications will become drastically reduced<\/b>. And if you look more closely, you\u2019ll see that the engagement comes <\/span>only from your followers<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trick to really checking to find out if you\u2019ve been affected by a <\/span>shadowban<\/b> is to post something with a hashtag and then ask a friend (<\/span>who does not follow you<\/b>) to look for that hashtag. If your content doesn\u2019t appear <\/span>among the most recent posts<\/b>, then I’m afraid you\u2019ve been shadowbanned.<\/span><\/p>\n

What causes a Shadowban?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Basically, a shadowban happens because Instagram understands that you’ve used your platform in a way that is <\/span>fraudulent or toxic<\/b>. What does that mean? It means you\u2019ve infringed on the Instagram <\/span>Terms of Service <\/b>by using<\/span> third-parties to automatically like, comment or otherwise use some type of <\/span>automated bot<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

To avoid having Instagram detect your account as a <\/span>spammer<\/b>, try not to go over <\/span>150-200<\/b> likes, <\/span>60<\/b> comments and<\/span> 60 <\/b>follows \/ unfollows per hour.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another possibility is that users are <\/span>reporting your account<\/b>. As a preventive measure until Instagram can check whether your content is OK, they will stop showing it at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

In some cases, it has even happened because you\u2019ve used the same hashtag in your publications too many times.<\/span><\/p>\n

How can you remove the Shadowban?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no magic solution, but there is some good news: shadowbans last for <\/span>two or three weeks<\/b>. However, you can <\/span>reduce this time<\/b> in different ways:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • For starters, <\/span>stop using bots<\/b>, buying followers or making unusual Instagram hacks.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Take a rest<\/b> from Instagram for a <\/span>couple of days<\/b>. No publications, comments or even logins.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Check to see which <\/span>third-party applications<\/b> you\u2019ve given permission to. You can see these by going into your account from the <\/span>Internet version.<\/b> They will be shown in your settings when you click on the \u201cgear\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Publish from your mobile<\/b>. Don\u2019t use external platforms.<\/li>\n
  • Interact with your community<\/b> in an honest and organic way. Don\u2019t use “Nice” or some emoji, like the bots do.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Do not use banned hashtags and delete them<\/b> from your previous publications. Reduce the number of hashtags and look for new ones. (More on that in a moment.)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Some users have also said that changing from a company account to a personal profile also works.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • If nothing works and you haven\u2019t done anything wrong, you can always “Report a problem”<\/b> from your options panel and contact Instagram to explain your situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Banned Hashtags<\/span><\/h2>\n

    You don\u2019t need to have been shadowbanned to have some of your publications not reach new audiences. It\u2019s possible that you\u2019re using a banned hashtag.<\/span><\/p>\n

    When a hashtag is prone to <\/span>inappropriate content<\/b>, Instagram will limit its appearances in the community. If you search for it, only the <\/span>most prominent publications <\/b>will appear, and not the most recent ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The biggest problem is that if you use a banned hashtag, <\/span>your post will not be shown for any of its other hashtags<\/b>. For example, if in a photo you use #breakfast, #cereals and #pornfood, your post will not be shown in any of the hashtags because #pornfood is banned. So be careful!<\/span><\/p>\n

    There are some hashtags that have been banned permanently, and others temporarily… so this list can change. Currently, there are more than <\/span>100,000<\/b> banned hashtags. Since we can\u2019t include all of them here, we are going to list the most common ones that are included in the Preview app.<\/span><\/p>\n

    We recommend that you <\/span>investigate<\/b> the ones you use the most often, lest you be limiting your reach unnecessarily.<\/span><\/p>\n
